IRON STRUCTURES is a 3D design project for the Matadero Festival in Murcia in April of this year. It consisted of the design and creation of several 3D pieces. I was familiar with the collective and their work, but we hadn't worked together before. The main inspiration came from Matadero's own aesthetic. The first thing I did was browse through their Instagram, viewing and analyzing hundreds of photographs taken by Josu Gonzalez. What caught my attention most was the location where Matadero held their club events. It was a fascinating, very industrial, brutalist place that exuded a powerful energy. This initially prompted me to design some pieces based on that enviroment. Elements like the red lighting, iron, and the structures within the venue were also key.

On the other hand, I think I was unconsciously inspired a bit by the aesthetics of Quake 2, a 1997 first-person shooter developed by ID Software and published by Activision. I say it this way, "unconsciously" because honestly I didn't see or think about any of this until that moment where i was appliying the materials & lightng to the 3D objects I had certain flashes of the video game, from when I was little kid, playing it on the PC and even on the N64 with my older brother and there I associated everything. Aesthetically, it was something that fully complemented the idea behind the concept. The rust, the brutalist architecture, and that apocalyptic tone gave it that special touch.

The pieces were initially created in Blender and then modified and mixed live with Resolume Arena. The overall process took me a couple of weeks, spread over four- to five-hour sessions, not every day of course, but maybe 2 or 3 days a week, considering that I had other projects on top of me. It was a fun and educational process. As for the result, you can see it below. It was a great experience to play with and incorporate these pieces into my set; the people at Matadero were very happy with the work.

For the teaser, I created a style-mix composition. First, I used Josu Gonzalez's extensive catalog of Matadero photos as a base and combined them with the 3D renders in a simple way. Then, I did a more precise and powerful job, adding effects to the 3D renders, closer to how they would look in real life. You can watch and support the video on this Instagram reel or watch it below.
